The Most Important Gift

Written by Felicia Rondo, Published: 12/24/2021

Summary: It’s Christmas Eve and Sonic’s gotten everything but the most important gift of all - a gift for his little brother Tails! What he learns this holiday season is that sometimes the best gifts can’t be wrapped and hidden under a tree, but that doesn’t make them any less worth giving to the ones you love most. Happy holidays!

Contains: Snow, Chocolates, Mittens, and Holiday cheer.

Children laughed as snow fell. Winter was here, as anyone could tell. With not a Badnik in sight, all might seem well… to all but one spiny blue hedgehog, going through holiday hell.

With the speed of all of Santa’s reindeer, Sonic raced to find what he needed this year. Just yesterday it seemed, it was hard to believe, it was just December 1st… and now it was Christmas Eve! The rest of his shopping was well in the past, but much to his dismay, there was still a present to get at the last, and soon it would be Christmas Day!

For everyone else, it had been so easy! He knew just what to give, from Amy to Breezie. Amy’s he hoped she would highly rate, as he bought her chocolates… in lieu of a date.

For Knuckles he got a gift that had become a yearly tradition, as this year he would receive another pair of ill-fitting mittens.

Shadow’s was a challenge, but not one the blue blur couldn’t face - Sonic was getting him a book, which the other hedgehog could read at his own pace.

The list went on, and he didn’t have all day! It wasn’t Rouge who was left, nor Mighty, nor Ray! Of all the friends Sonic knew he couldn’t fail, the last gift he had left to get was for none other than Tails!

He begrudgingly returned home with nothing left to do. When Tails discovered him, he’d never seen a hedgehog so blue. “Sonic, you look awful! Can I ask you what’s wrong? Was it that ‘Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer’ song?”

“Tails!” Sonic reacted with a yelp. “No, it wasn’t,” though it certainly didn’t help. With nowhere left to hide his sorrow, Sonic asked, “What do you want most out of Christmas tomorrow?”

The fox rested his hand on his cheek and wondered just what to say, not knowing the next words he’d speak would color the rest of his brother’s day. “If it’s up to me,” he began with a smile, “I just wanna relax with my friends for a while.”

This wasn’t something that could be made with material, yet there really wasn’t anything more special or real. Sonic hugged his little brother and dashed to his phone, making plans for their friends to come visit their home.

And when they did, Sonic knew what he’d done. Instead of worrying, he made sure everyone had fun. Amy shared her chocolates, Knuckles gave Sonic a frustrated talking-to, and Shadow shared his thoughts on what pages he’d viewed.

As the day drew to a close and the sky turned dim, Sonic found there was one last wrapped present - from Tails, to him! “I don’t know what to say!” Sonic exclaimed at the fox, “I don’t even deserve it,” he stated, pushing away the box.

“Don’t be silly, of course you do!” Tails assured his best friend forever, “Would I lie to you?” And of course, he would never.

“If you say so,” Sonic gave in, tugging at the bow that the box came in. When he opened and saw what his best friend had gifted, his eyes widened open and his spirit was lifted. “It’s my favorite game!” he shouted with glee, “how can I thank you for getting this for me?”

“It’s not just your favorite, it’s also mine too! Just get it out of its plastic so I can play it with you!”

And so they played until night turned to dawn, with sleep coming shortly after the end credits song. They shared their happiness like they shared everything - like chilidogs, memories, and shining gold power rings.

Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and whatever you do - remember to cherish your one and only player 2.

The End.
